Trials the key to start the schoolboys 2016 season

Northern Ireland under 18 international team managers, Conor Marlin and Frankie Wilson are scanning the country for the top players to be part of the under 18 schoolboy international team to compete against the home nations in the Centenary shield.

The managers have stressed the importance of identifying the best players in the country to be part of the team, “We have been scouting players from the turn of the year, however it is hard to see every player at this age group play, that’s why we feel that it is vital to hold trial matches to allow players the opportunity to fight for their place on the team” Frankie Wilson. Conor Marlin added “We found great success in trials last year and feel that it benefits players and gives us the opportunity to select the best squad possible.

The Northern Ireland Schools FA are looking recommendations of players at the 1998 and 1999 age groups (players must be born ON OR AFTER 1 JANUARY 1998) to trial and be selected for the team that play in the centenary shield against England, Scotland, Wales and Republic of Ireland.

Northern Ireland learn valuable lessons v Poland

Northern Ireland U16 2-4 Poland U16

Northern Ireland U16 played two home friendly internationals against Poland on Tuesday 22nd and Thursday 24th September. Northern Ireland played the first game at Queens Dub and started the game brightly controlling possession at the back and creating a few openings with Luke Ferguson going close. However, it was Poland who scored the first goal of the game when Mateusz Szwed controlled the ball on the left wing cut inside and unleashed a 25 yard strike into the top corner. Northern Ireland again went close shortly after when Luke Ferguson set up Josh Tipping who couldn’t get his shot on target. Poland stretched their lead when Mateusz Skrzypczak scored a quick fire double, However Northern Ireland came back into the game with Josh Tipping scoring from close range from a mistake by the Poland Goalkeeper.  Northern Ireland goalkeeper Oliver Webber was in good form saving from close range on a couple of occasion however there was nothing he could do when Kacper Wełniak finished off a good Polish move.  The goal of the game came 5 minutes from time when Northern Ireland substitute Tom Mathieson struck a 25 yard half volley into the top corner.  Overall a fair result with both teams showing some moments of quality throughout.

Northern Ireland team:

Oliver Webber, Keith Kearney, Adam McAleenan, Aaron Donnelly, Luke Ferguson (c), Jack Chambers, Josh Tipping, Reece McGinley, Harry Robinson, Caolan Boyd, Ethan Galbraith.

Substitutes:

Sean Wallace, Ian Maxwell, Marc McKenna, Rory Browne, Leo Brown, Andrew Scott, Tom Mathieson, Jordan McEneff, Daniel McKeown, Niall Owens, Declan Dunne.

Northern Ireland 0-2 Poland

The second game between the sides came two days later at Comber Rec FC.  Both sides made changes and it was Poland who started the brighter controlling possession and went ahead when Patryk Zaucha finished a flowing move. Seven minutes later Poland had a second when Kacper Welnaik finished from close range. Northern Ireland came into the game in the latter stages of the half however were unable to trouble the Polish goalkeeper.

In the second half Northern Ireland should have pulled a goal back when substitute Josh Tipping missed from close range.  Minutes after Tipping and Ethan Galbraith both had chances to convert at the back post however the Polish defence stood strong. Northern Ireland pushed to the end with Ethan Galbraith testing the keeper however for all their hard work and effort the goal did not come for the team.
