Busy time for Under 16 Team

September will be a busy month for the Northern Ireland Under 16 team. The season begins with the squad travelling to Finland for two games. The first match is at Karjaa on Monday 14 September and two days later the teams meet again at Mantsala.

Thirteen players were capped last season at Under 15 level in games against Belgium, Turkey, Estonia and Slovakia but the matches against Finland will be the first taste of international football for five boys. Two victories over Estonia and draws against Belgium and Slovakia show that the team is capable of a high standard of play but the trip to Finland will still be a stern test. Games between the teams have always been close.

An even sterner test is expected the following week when Poland are the visitors. Twelve years ago two goals from Jonny Evans ensured a 2-1 success over Poland at the Belgian International Tournament. Since then in a dozen meetings at Under 16 level six games have been drawn with Poland successful in the other six. The Northern Ireland team will be hoping for another victory when the sides clash at Queens Malone Playing Fields on Tuesday 22 September, kick off 3.00pm, while a large crowd at Comber on Thursday 24 September, kick off 4.00pm, should be a spur to the players.

The Northern Ireland Schools’ Football Association is offering free entrance to any school or youth group wishing to attend these games against Poland. Any group wishing to gain free entrance should send their details by email to Edwin Ferris, NISFA Treasurer, at This email address is being protected from spambots. Slovakia v Northern Ireland – U15 Schoolboys (Wednesday 27th May 2015 – NTC Stadium Senec, 11.00 am)

Match Report

Tipping hat trick secures a draw for Northern Ireland The Northern Ireland U15 team claimed a well-deserved 3-3 draw in their international challenge match against Slovakia in Senec thanks to a second half trick by Josh Tipping.

The hosts opened the scoring after 23 minutes when Bruno Cernansky fired home from close range. Soon afterwards Marc McKenna missed a great opportunity to level the scores when he collected a pass from Caolan Boyd but with only the keeper to beat McKenna fired high over the bar from 12 yards.

One minute before the break Nicholas Pochyly doubled the lead blasting the ball into the roof of the net from the edge of the box.

Five minutes after the restart Tipping got the first of his goals netting with a low right foot shot after being sent through by McKenna.

Slovak substitute Denis Potoma restored the two goal advantage with his first touch of the ball when a wind assisted free kick flew into the net.

Northern Ireland pressed strongly and following a great run down the right, a cross to the far post by Sean Wallace was headed back by Pablo Andrade and Tipping made no mistake with a close range header.

Six minutes later Andrade again provided the opening for Tipping as his inch perfect pass left the striker with only the keeper to beat and he finished with a powerful shot into the corner of the net.
